Ethiopia to become hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing in Africa

Ethiopia aims to become a hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing on the African continent. To achieve this goal, the country plans to implement a number of measures, including utilising the opportunities offered by the African Continental Free Trade Area, developing regional supply chains, strengthening regulatory cooperation and introducing joint procurement mechanisms. This was stated by Ethiopia’s State Minister for Health, Muluken Argaw, according to ENA, a partner of TV BRICS.

According to the minister, these measures will help expand the production of medical products in Africa. He emphasised that developing local production of essential medicines, vaccines and medical equipment is crucial to ensuring health security.

“Ethiopia’s ambition looks beyond our borders. We are ready to leverage the African Continental Free Trade Area, develop regional value chains, and expand opportunities for African-made health products,” said Muluken Argaw.

The Minister emphasised that Ethiopia intends to develop medical tourism at the same time. According to forecasts, by 2030 the country’s pharmaceutical market will exceed US$4 billion.
