India surpasses historic coal production of 1 billion tonnes

The sector contributes around 50 per cent of Indian Railways’ freight revenue

India has reached a historic milestone by exceeding 1 billion tonnes in coal production, with cutting-edge technologies and efficient methods, as reported by
ANI, a partner of TV BRICS.

Nearly 74 per cent of India’s power generation is dependent on thermal power plants, reinforcing the need for a robust and sustainable coal sector.

Official data from the Indian Ministry of Coal underscores the sector’s critical role in India’s energy landscape. As the holder of the world’s fifth-largest geological coal reserves and the second-largest global consumer, coal remains integral, contributing to 55 per cent of the nation’s energy mix, the experts claim.

Coal has been the fastest-growing sector among India’s eight core industries, recording a 5.3 per cent growth rate in December 2024 compared to the previous year.

The sector also plays a vital economic role, contributing around 50 per cent of Indian Railways’ freight revenue and providing direct employment to nearly 4.78 thousand individuals.

According to the source, this achievement will fuel increasing power demands, drive economic growth, and ensure a brighter future for every Indian.
