Indonesia plans to select a site for the construction of its first nuclear power station by 2027 at the latest. Possible locations include the Riau Archipelago, Kalimantan, Sumatra and the island of Halmahera. This was reported by ANTARA.

The authorities are conducting technical and economic studies of potential sites and assessing their safety. Indonesia is also considering cooperation with Russia as part of the nuclear power plant project on the island of Halmahera.

According to the state-owned energy company’s plans, commercial operation of the first nuclear power station is set to begin by 2032. The station’s initial capacity will be 250 MW.

In the long term, Indonesia plans to increase its nuclear power capacity to 35–42 GW by 2060. It is forecast that by that time, nuclear power will be able to meet up to 12.1 per cent of the country’s primary energy consumption.
