Indonesia aims to lead ASEAN’s digital economy and AI development
Indonesia is ready to take a leading role in advancing ASEAN’s digital economy, with a strong focus on artificial intelligence (AI) ethics and regional cooperation, according to Indonesian Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Nezar Patria. This is reported by
Antara News.
Patria highlighted the country’s significant position within ASEAN’s digital ecosystem. “ASEAN’s digital economy will reach US$1 trillion in 2030, with US$366 billion expected to come from Indonesia,” he said. With a population of 280 million, Indonesia accounts for around 40 per cent of ASEAN’s population and makes a major contribution to the region’s digital growth.
Patria stressed that Indonesia’s ambition is not only to boost technology adoption but also to position itself as a strategic player globally, especially in AI as a key emerging technology. To support this goal, the government has strengthened digital infrastructure and introduced guidelines to ensure the ethical development of AI.
He noted that internet penetration has risen sharply to 80 per cent, up from under 70 per cent five years ago, and that 97 per cent of residential areas now have 4G coverage. Efforts are now focused on accelerating the transition to 5G networks.
