Iran’s steel industry has achieved a 90 per cent self-sufficiency rate. This was stated by Alireza Ibrahim, a member of the Iranian Steel Manufacturers’ Association, according to IRNA, a partner of TV BRICS.
At a meeting on the current state of steel production in Iran, the expert noted that related industries serving the steel sector have expanded significantly. This has made it possible to manufacture even the most complex parts and equipment domestically.
According to him, only around 5 per cent of specialised components for control systems and high-precision instruments are dependent on foreign supplies. Moreover, the service life of such equipment is quite long, so there is no need for regular replacement.
Speaking about the supply of raw materials to the steel industry, Alireza Ibrahim emphasised that the majority of raw material requirements are met from domestic resources. Iron ore is extracted almost entirely from deposits within the country. Only a small proportion of the required coal or coke is imported, as the volume and quality of domestic production are insufficient to fully meet demand. According to the expert, by utilising alternative technological solutions and natural gas, Iran has managed to compensate for these shortcomings and achieve the balance necessary to sustain production within the country.
