Mariinsky Theatre to stage Rossini’s William Tell in production by Italian director

The premiere of Gioachino Rossini’s opera “William Tell” will take place at the Mariinsky II in Saint Petersburg on 16 and 17 October. The production was staged by Italian director Giancarlo del Monaco, with Valery Gergiev serving as its Music Director, the theatre’s press office reported.

“William Tell” is the composer’s final opera, written in 1829.

According to Giancarlo del Monaco, the specific features of each work influence the rehearsal process and the work of the production team.

“When the opera changes, the entire rehearsal process changes as well. Much depends on how the director or conductor is accustomed to working. But, of course, the opera itself also largely determines the approach,” the director noted.

The scenery will play a special role in the production, conveying the atmosphere of mediaeval Switzerland. Forests, mountains and a lake will appear on stage. Trees will form the central element of the set: they will be present in every act, while in the second act they will change shape and become part of the stage action.

“Nature is at the heart of this opera. Trees will be present in every act. In the second act, they will transform and become an important part of the stage action,” said set designer Antonio Romero.

The new production will continue the Mariinsky Theatre’s collaboration with Giancarlo del Monaco. The director previously staged Giuseppe Verdi’s opera “Aida” there, which received the Golden Mask Аward.
