Oman rises six places in global environmental performance ranking

Oman has improved its position in the 2026 Environmental Performance Index, rising six places to rank 49th globally, compared with 55th in 2024. The results reflect the country’s progress in environmental management, natural resource protection and sustainable development, according to the Al Shabiba, a partner of TV BRICS.

Oman ranked first worldwide in six sub-indicators: household solid fuel use, sustainable solid waste management, wastewater treatment, species habitats, reducing trawling in open waters and the trend in sulphur dioxide emissions. These results highlight the country’s work to improve waste management, protect biodiversity and address environmental challenges.

The country’s circular economy initiatives include recycling 1.77 million tonnes of municipal solid waste, with 85 recycling plants operating nationwide. Oman has also achieved 100 per cent coverage in safe solid waste management and waste collection and transport services.

Oman is continuing to expand nature conservation and climate initiatives. In 2025, the country had 32 nature reserves covering approximately 187,276 square kilometres. Its blue carbon programme aims to plant 100 million mangrove trees across 20,000 hectares, with the potential to remove around 14 million tonnes of carbon dioxide.

Oman’s wider environmental agenda supports its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 under Oman Vision 2040.
