Russia and Vietnam approve joint scientific research plan for 2027

Russia and Vietnam have approved a joint scientific research programme for 2027, covering infectious disease studies, marine research and the training of scientific personnel. The agreement was reached during the 37th meeting of the Intergovernmental Coordinating Committee of the Joint Russian-Vietnamese Tropical Research and Technology Centre in Moscow.

The officials reviewed the centre’s scientific achievements in 2026 and identified priorities for expanding bilateral research cooperation.

“The Tropical Centre holds a special place in the comprehensive strategic partnership between Russia and Vietnam. Our common task is to consistently strengthen its scientific potential, introduce modern research methods and create new opportunities for specialists from both countries,” Russian Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Konstantin Mogilevsky said.

One of the key developments was the opening of a laboratory for the study and prevention of infectious diseases in September 2026. Equipped with Russian-made scientific instruments, the facility supports molecular genetic and virological research.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Vietnamese leader To Lam participated in the laboratory’s inauguration ceremony via video link.

Marine science also featured prominently in bilateral cooperation. In June 2026, Russian and Vietnamese researchers conducted their first full-scale expedition aboard the research vessel Professor Gagarinsky, which Russia transferred to the Tropical Centre in 2025.

The expedition generated new scientific data for further studies, with another joint research voyage scheduled for 2027.

Scientific participation also expanded during the year, with more than 400 Russian researchers and specialists contributing to the centre’s activities in 2026.

Alongside joint research, the countries have introduced internship programmes enabling Vietnamese specialists to receive training at Russian research institutes and universities. The initiative focuses on advanced scientific methods and professional development.

Following the meeting, the committee approved the Tropical Centre’s research plan for 2027 and agreed to continue joint scientific projects and expand specialist training programmes.

The two countries also reviewed preparations for the centre’s 40th anniversary, which will be celebrated in 2028.
