South African official emphasises importance of cooperation between private sector and government entities of South Africa and Egypt within BRICS framework

This development further enhances the South’s role in global affairs

During the 10th session of the Joint Commission for Cooperation, Egyptian counterpart Sameh Shoukry and Minister of International Relations and Cooperation of the Republic of South Africa Naledi Pandor stressed that the two countries need to significantly increase trade and investment.

Pandor noted the vital role of partnership between the private sector and government agencies in this endeavour, emphasising the importance of establishing a Business Council. This is reported by
Prensa Latina, a partner of TV BRICS.

He noted that once operationalised, such a structure would greatly assist in coordinating and expanding trade and investment opportunities.

South African Minister also urged Shoukry to utilise the benefits offered by the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA) to facilitate trade.

According to the foreign minister, AfCFTA serves as an important model to promote integration, reduce trade barriers, promote preferential trade and create an enabling environment that will mutually benefit the two countries and the continent as a whole.

Pandor also stated that several agreements and memoranda of understanding are expected to be signed during the session.

She concluded by emphasising that bilateral relations should not only be a guiding light, but also highlight the importance of regional integration.
