Thailand seeks to boost Russia trade and deepen energy cooperation

Thailand is seeking to significantly expand trade with Russia and strengthen cooperation in energy and emerging technologies, as reported by
VNA, a TV BRICS partner.

Thai Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow said that annual bilateral trade is currently worth around US$1.7 billion. Speaking during an official visit to Russia, Sihasak said Thailand was seeking to accelerate negotiations on a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). The push comes as Thailand and Russia have agreed to hold annual meetings to sustain momentum in bilateral economic and trade cooperation.

Bangkok has expressed particular interest in potential cooperation linked to the Sakhalin II oil and gas project, citing its relatively short maritime transport distance to Thailand.

People-to-people ties are another important component. Thailand recorded more than 2 million Russian visitors in 2025 and said it intends to strengthen measures aimed at ensuring their safety. The two sides are also discussing cooperation in artificial intelligence, digital transformation and cybersecurity.

The countries are preparing cultural and artistic programmes for 2027, when they will mark the 130th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
