City authorities in South Africa’s Johannesburg said that as of 8 December, 40,321 applications for senior citizen discounts had been received, of which 6,016 had to be rejected for various reasons.
A total of 21,436 pensioners out of the 33,121 applications processed will be eligible for the homebuyer discount.
This means that in future, some pensioners will pay nothing in the rates section of their municipal account while others will get a 50 per cent reduction in property rates based on their claims.
According to Kgamanyane Maphologela, director of communications, Johannesburg authorities are pleased that more pensioners are qualifying for the benefits.
Maphologela said another 5 669 successful applicants have already received retrospective adjustment of their payments from 1 July 2023. This is reported by
Pretoria News, a partner of TV BRICS.
According to him, the reasons why some pensioners’ applications for discounts were rejected are as follows:
*the applicant is not the registered owner of the property;
*the application or supporting documents are incomplete (the team sends a request for more information and if received, the application is reconsidered);
*the income of the registered owner, in the case of pensioners aged 60-70 years, exceeds the income threshold $1,112 U.S.
