Iran develops rice varieties adapted to drought conditions

Iran is developing new rice varieties adapted to changing climatic conditions and limited water resources, with a focus on maintaining stable production under drought stress. The work is being carried out by the Rice Research Institute of Iran, according to Mehr News Agency, a partner of TV BRICS.

Ali Akbar Ebadi, Head of the institute, said that developing varieties tolerant to drought is one of the main priorities of its research programme. New varieties are being introduced to help maintain production in conditions of water scarcity while reducing the impact of environmental stresses.

The research programme also aims to strengthen food security and improve agricultural productivity, particularly in Iran’s northern provinces, where rice plays an important role in the economy and social life.

According to Ebadi, new varieties must combine good yields with desirable cooking and quality characteristics. This approach is intended to meet the needs of farmers while ensuring that the rice is well received by consumers.

One of the varieties being developed is Hasti, designed to maintain stable yields during drought stress towards the end of the growing season. It also has favourable agricultural and quality characteristics.

The institute is also working on the development of hybrid rice varieties and the wider application of research findings in agriculture. These efforts include establishing demonstration sites and involving researchers directly in work with farmers to promote modern production methods and the practical use of scientific results.
