Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro reach second round of Brazil’s presidential election

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Flavio Bolsonaro will continue their bid for the presidency of Brazil in the second round of the election. This was reported by the Superior Electoral Court following the counting of votes from the first round, which took place on Sunday, 4 October 2026.

According to the count of 99.99 per cent of the votes, Flavio Bolsonaro received 47.03 per cent of valid votes, while Lula da Silva received 45.16 per cent. Bolsonaro received the majority of votes in 15 regions of the country, while Lula did so in 12.

The winner of Brazil’s presidential election will be determined in the second round, as neither candidate received more than half of the valid votes in the first round. The second round will take place on 25 October.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is the incumbent president, running for re-election. Flavio Bolsonaro is a senator running in a presidential election for the first time.
