The celebration was organised by the Russian Embassy in South Africa. Russian Ambassador Roman Ambarov made a welcoming speech. He expressed his gratitude to all those present and stressed that this meeting is intended to honour the memory of those who gave their lives for peace and freedom of future generations.

Ambarov added that 9 May for many countries is not just a date on the calendar, but a reason for pride and a holiday that “brings tears to our eyes and hearts”.

“This evening we honour legacy not only through words but also through arts,” the diplomat said.

The guests were shown a Russian film about life and love during the war years. The audience was particularly attracted by the debut performance of the song “The Blue Scarf” by the Mamelodi Music Conservatoiry’s Orchestra.
